TNT for July 29, 2011

So, let’s try to get back into the swing of  Tech News Today.  It’s been awhile, but nothing astutely interesting has happened in technology, so let’s just jump in right were we left off in June.

1.)  NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — In the smartphone market, it’s a great time to be Apple and Samsung. Nokia and Motorola? Not so much.

Last quarter, Apple (AAPLFortune 500) became the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer for the first time, and Samsung moved up one spot to No. 2, according to a Strategy Analytics study released Friday.

2.) It’s been exactly one month since Google+ made its debut. The social network was designed to be more than just Google’s response to Facebook; it’s “an extension of Google itself,” as Google SVP Vic Gundotra told us before launch. After the failure of Google Wave and Google Buzz, Google+ is the search giant’s last best chance to grab a piece of the social-networking pie.

3.)   A tipster sent pictures to tech website 9to5 Mac yesterday claiming to be photos of an Apple employee using the iPhone 5.  The tipster sent the site pictures of a man whom he claims was an Apple employee, hunched over using a new device that matched previous descriptions of what the iPhone 5 may look like.  Read more of iPhone 5 Release: Possible Sighting of New Device on The Christian Post.

Additionally, to improve on the current sales, Samsung will introduce a new white variant of the “Superphone” starting from the United Kingdom.  Way to be a day late and a dollar short, Samsung.  Read more Samsung Galaxy S II To Be Launched In White on techtree.com.

4.) Microsoft has now taken aim at Google’s Gmail service with a hard hitting advertising campaign criticizing the fact that Google ‘reads’ emails to deliver content aware advertising.  Yawns.  We’ve heard it before.  Now Microsoft and Google, are you going to play nice, or am I going to have to send you to your rooms in Silicon Valley and Redmond?  Read more Email war: Google versus Microsoft on mybroadband.co.za.
